The glass shelf in your curio cabinet cracked, and the manufacturer stopped making that cabinet 10 years ago. Or you've got a shower niche, a bar wall, or a bathroom cabinet, and every glass shelf in the store is an inch too long.
Custom glass shelves fix that. Enter your length, depth, and thickness, pick your edges and corners, and you'll see your price on the spot. We cut each shelf to your numbers, temper it, pack it for freight, and ship it to your door.
| Glass type | Clear tempered safety glass |
| Thickness | 1/4" to 1/2" [CONFIRM: the tempered builder offers 1/8" to 1/2". Recommend hiding 1/8" here. It's too thin for most shelves.] |
| Size | Up to 48" long, as small as 4" x 4" |
| Shapes | Square and rectangle |
| Edges | Seamed, flat polish, pencil polish, beveled |
| Corners | Square, clipped, or rounded |
| Corner shelves, holes & notches | Triangle corner shelves, plus holes and notches for brackets and clips, aren't in the online builder. Contact us to order them directly. |
For almost every shelf, yes. Tempering is a heat treatment that makes glass about 4 times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness. That means less sag and fewer chipped edges when you load it up.
It also changes how glass breaks. Regular glass breaks into long, jagged shards. Tempered glass crumbles into small, dull pieces. In a shower or bathroom, where you're wet and barefoot, that difference matters.
It depends on 4 things: the glass thickness, the span between supports, the shelf depth, and the brackets holding it. Thicker glass and supports placed closer together carry more weight.
One thing people miss: your shelf can only hold what your brackets and wall anchors can hold. Check the load rating on your hardware, and anchor into studs when you can. [CONFIRM: does Flash Glass have load guidance or a chart? If yes, add it here. Without real numbers, keep this section as written.]
Use this as a starting point. Replacing a broken shelf? Match the thickness of the old one. Your clips and supports were sized for it.
| Where the shelf goes | Thickness to start with |
| Medicine cabinets and small cabinet shelves with light items | 1/4" |
| Kitchen cabinets, curio and china cabinets, display cases | 1/4" to 3/8" |
| Shower and bathroom shelves | 1/4" to 3/8" |
| Floating shelves in clamp brackets | Whatever your bracket is rated for (check the package) |
| Bar shelves, bookshelves, and long spans | 3/8" to 1/2" |
[CONFIRM: Flash Glass should sign off on these thickness ranges before publishing.]
Floating shelves hang on clamp brackets or support pins. Before you order, check 2 numbers on your bracket: the glass thickness it grips and how deep the clamp goes. Order your glass to fit those numbers.
If your bracket bolts through the glass, contact us to order your shelves with holes. [CONFIRM: does Flash Glass sell brackets? If not, keep this line: "Brackets aren't included."]
Tempered glass can't be cut, drilled, or edged after it's tempered. Try it and the shelf shatters. So your size, edges, corners, and any holes or notches all get set before the glass goes into the furnace.
Measure twice. If your shelf needs a hole, a notch for a clip, or a corner shape, contact us to order it directly.
Our online builder walks you through each step:
Custom glass is cut to your numbers, so it can't be returned for a sizing mistake. Here's how to get them right the first time.
Cabinet shelves: Measure the inside width wall to wall, at the height where the shelf will sit. Measure at the front and the back too, since cabinets aren't always square. Use the smallest number, then take off at least 1/16" so the shelf slides in without binding.
Depth: Measure from the back wall to the front, and check that the door closes with the shelf in place. Hinges and door-mounted racks eat space.
Replacing a broken shelf: Measure the space, not the broken glass. Then measure the thickness of a leftover piece.
Corner shelves: Measure along each wall from the corner out to where the shelf should stop. Corner shelves are ordered directly, so send those numbers (and a sketch if the corner isn't a clean 90 degrees) through our contact page.
Floating shelves: Length is your call. Depth has to fit your bracket.
Write everything as length x depth in inches and fractions.
Each order ships in a protective crating built for freight, with edge and surface protection, and it's insured, with tracking. Inspect it before you sign. If anything arrives damaged, you must contact us within 48 hours of delivery, with photos of the glass and the packaging, to discuss a replacement.

Tempered glass. It's about 4 times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness, and it breaks into small, dull pieces instead of jagged shards.
It depends on the thickness, the span between supports, the depth, and the brackets. Thicker glass with supports closer together holds more. Your shelf can only carry what your brackets and wall anchors are rated for.
Most cabinet, bathroom, and shower shelves use 1/4" to 3/8". Bar shelves, bookshelves, and long spans need 3/8" to 1/2". Replacing a shelf? Match the old thickness.
Right here. Enter your length, depth, and thickness in the builder, pick your edges, and your custom glass shelves ship to your door. Big-box stores mostly carry a few stock sizes.
No. Any cut or drill hole after tempering shatters the glass. Need holes or notches? Contact us to order them, and we'll cut them before tempering.
Yes, but not through the online builder. Contact us with your wall measurements to order a triangle corner shelf directly.
No, you get the glass only. Match your order to the thickness and depth your brackets are made for.
Yes. Measure the space the shelf sits in, measure the thickness of a leftover piece, and enter both in the builder.
