Description

You already know your measurements and the thickness you need, but your local glass shop doesn't do one-off small pieces. Either their minimums are more than the actual glass costs, or they are a week or more out. That's where Flash Glass comes in. You can order online and get it shipped fast and safely to your door.

All you need to do is enter your measurements, pick your edge finish, corner customizations, and any holes that need to be cut, and you'll see your pricing on the spot. Then we'll cut it, temper it, pack it using the best glass-packing techniques in 100% recyclable materials, and send it right to your doorstep. So you don't even need to take a trip or put it awkwardly in your back seat.

Why People Choose Tempered Glass

Tempering is a heat treatment, and it changes two things: It makes the glass up to four times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness, so it holds up as a tabletop, loaded shelf, or bumped panel. It also changes how the glass breaks. Instead of long, jagged shards, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces. That's why most building codes require it in doors, shower and tub enclosures, and glass near the floor. If your project is one of those, tempered glass likely isn't optional.

Tempered glass also handles sun and everyday heat better than standard glass, but it is NOT fireplace or woodstove glass. For those, you need ceramic glass rated for higher heat.

What People Use Tempered Glass For

  • Shelves that can carry weight without sagging or chipping
  • Tabletops and desk tops, round, square, or custom shapes
  • Shower and bath panels (required by code) cut to your opening with holes for your hardware needs.
  • Tabletop and counter protectors that take the scratches so the surface underneath doesn't.
  • Windows and door lites, for a safer replacement in high-traffic and ground-level spots.
  • Cabinet and furniture inserts at exact sizes, in batches as needed.

Read This Before You Order

Tempered glass can't be cut, drilled, or edged after it's tempered. Trying to do any of that will cause it to shatter. Tempering puts the surface under tension, and any later cuts will release that tension all at once. So your size, edges, corners, and holes have to be set before it goes through the furnace. Measure twice, and get your holes right in the order, because there's no trimming it later. Unsure about the cutout? Let us know on our contact page.

Build It Exactly How You Need It.

Our online builder takes you through every step of the process:

  1. Thickness: 1/8" to 1/2" thicknesses are available. Get a thicker piece for table tops and loaded shelves, and get a thinner piece for things like inserts.
  2. Dimensions: Enter your dimensions, down to the fraction of an inch. This is what we use to make our cuts, so measure twice!
  3. Shape: Square or rectangle standard with circles, ovals, and custom shapes (for certain thicknesses)
  4. Edges: Seamed, flat polished, pencil polished, or beveled
  5. Corners: Square, clipped, or rounded
  6. Holes & cutouts: For hinges and hardware, all set before tempering.

How to Measure (so you only have to order once)

Custom glass is cut to the numbers you provide, so it can't be returned for a sizing mistake. Measure the opening, not the frame, and check the width and height in a few spots in case it isn't square. Allow a small gap where the glass sits in the channel (at least 1/16"), and write it as width x height in inches and fractions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tempered glass be cut after it's tempered?

No. Once it's tempered, it can't be cut, drilled, or reshaped in any way without shattering it, so every detail is set before tempering. Measure carefully and mark all holes in the order.

Is tempered glass stronger and safer than regular glass?

Yes to both. It's about four times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness, and it breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp, jagged shards, which is why most building codes require it in doors, showers, and glass near the floor.

How much does custom tempered glass cost?

It depends on thickness, size, edges, corners, holes, and shipping. The customizer will show you your exact total before you pay.

What thicknesses and sizes can I order?

1/8" to 1/2", and up to 48"x48", and as small as 4"x4"

Can I get custom shapes and holes?

Yes, for most glass thicknesses, as long as holes are set before tempering. Send a drawing for complex shapes.

Can I use tempered glass for a fireplace or woodstove?

No. Fireplace and woodstove glass needs ceramic glass, which is made specifically for high-heat situations. Regular tempered glass isn't rated for that kind of heat.
