Tempering is a heat treatment, and it changes two things: It makes the glass up to four times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness, so it holds up as a tabletop, loaded shelf, or bumped panel. It also changes how the glass breaks. Instead of long, jagged shards, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces. That's why most building codes require it in doors, shower and tub enclosures, and glass near the floor. If your project is one of those, tempered glass likely isn't optional. 

Tempered glass also handles sun and everyday heat better than standard glass, but it is NOT fireplace or woodstove glass. For those, you need ceramic glass rated for higher heat.

Read This Before You Order

Tempered glass can't be cut, drilled, or edged after it's tempered. Trying to do any of that will cause it to shatter. Tempering puts the surface under tension, and any later cuts will release that tension all at once. So your size, edges, corners, and holes have to be set before it goes through the furnace. 1. Thickness: 1/8" to 1/2" thicknesses are available. Get a thicker piece for table tops and loaded shelves, and get a thinner piece for things like inserts.
   
2. Dimensions: Enter your dimensions, down to the fraction of an inch. This is what we use to make our cuts, so measure twice!
3. Shape: Square or rectangle standard with circles, ovals, and custom shapes (for certain thicknesses)
4. Edges: Seamed, flat polished, pencil polished, or beveled
5. Corners: Square, clipped, or rounded 
6. Holes & cutouts: For hinges and hardware, all set before tempering.

How to Measure (so you only have to order once)

Custom glass is cut to the numbers you provide, so it can't be returned for a sizing mistake. Measure the opening, not the frame, and check the width and height in a few spots in case it isn't square. Allow a small gap where the glass sits in the channel (at least 1/16"), and write it as width x height in inches and fractions.

No. Once it's tempered, it can't be cut, drilled, or reshaped in any way without shattering it, so every detail is set before tempering. Measure carefully and mark all holes in the order.

No. Fireplace and woodstove glass needs ceramic glass, which is made specifically for high-heat situations. Regular tempered glass isn't rated for that kind of heat.
