Types Of Glass

Types Of Glass

We have three base glass types, but there are several common use cases for each - see below for more information.

Types of Glass

 • Custom-cut glass
 • 100% focused on customer service
 • Perfect for small or large pieces
 • Thousands of possibilities

Need a piece of glass, but not sure what kind? You're in the right place. For flat glass, cut to your specific measurements, there are three options: tempered, insulated (double-pane windows), and mirror. Each one fills a different need, and the right choice comes down to where the glass is going and how hard it has to work.

Every piece is cut to the exact specs you give us, to within 1/16", with your choice of edge and corner finishes. Single-pane glass comes in thicknesses from 1/8" up to 1/2". Go thicker for a table top or shelf, and thinner for a frame or cabinet door. We don't do stock sizes, so you don't have to settle for "close enough."

Tempered Glass

Custom tempered glass is heat-treated to be much stronger than regular glass, and when it does break, it crumbles into small, blunt pebbles instead of sharp shards. That makes it the safest choice for shower panels, glass table tops, shelves, and anything else that needs to be able to take some knocks or withstand some heat. It's the type of glass that most building codes call for near doors, stairs, and bathing areas.

One thing to keep in mind before you order: All cutting, drilling, and edge work happens before the glass is tempered. A finished tempered piece can't be trimmed, drilled, or polished after the tempering. So your dimensions and any hole positions need to be final on the order, because there's no adjusting the glass piece once it goes through heat treatment.

Insulated Glass (for Windows)

Insulated glass units are two panes held apart by a spacer and sealed around the edge, with a still air or gas-filled gap between them. This kind of unit is used in most modern houses to keep heat in and cold out. When you see fog or moisture trapped between the panes, the seals have failed, and the whole window unit needs to be replaced (not just one side). Order a replacement built to the overall thickness of your existing window, measured edge to edge, including the spacer.

Mirror Glass

Mirror glass is what you want for a wall mirror, a vanity, a closet door, or replacing a fogged, de-silvered mirror in an old frame. Order it cut to the exact opening with a finished edge, and it will drop straight into place. Tell us the edge finish you want, and whether it sits in a frame or mounts on its own.

Know the Project, but Not the Glass?

Plenty of people show up knowing what they're building, but not sure which type of glass it needs. Here's a quick guide: A table top or shelf is usually tempered glass for strength and safety. A shower panel is always tempered. A foggy window is almost always a failed seal on an insulated window unit. A bathroom or hallway mirror is made of mirror glass. Still not quite sure? Build the piece with our quote tool, and the options for your size will show up as you go.

Glass That Arrives in One Piece

Shipping fragile glass across the country sounds risky, and that's a fair worry to have. So every order ships crated with edge and surface protection built for freight handling, and every shipment is insured. If a piece shows up damaged, the breakage replacement policy covers it: report it within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damaged glass and damaged packaging, and a replacement piece will be shipped out. You're never stuck paying for glass that broke in transit.
